My neighbor built his first racecar for less than $15. With band-saw precision and painstaking effort, he carved a solid rectangular block of pine into an impressive aerodynamic package.

His 9-year-old-son painted the finished product French blue. His father polished the axles to a mirrored shine. Together they detailed the body with fiery decals and dubbed their Pinewood Derby entry “The Flaming Speeder.” The look on his son’s face was priceless.
